Māori Brain Health

Māori make up 15% of our population and have overall one of the poorest health status of all ethnic groups in New Zealand. Our Māori population is also extending its average lifespan at the most rapid rate. In the next twenty years, the number of Māori aged 65 years or more will grow at almost double the rate of non-Māori, making dementia, falls and cognitive decline increasingly relevant issues for Māori.

BRNZ is working hard on improving Māori health outcomes in partnership with Māori communities. Together, we aim to develop culturally responsive models of care that embrace Māori cultural practices and which are user-friendly and accessible to Māori and their whanau.
